Leather Satchel Making with Susan Barry From just a couple of pieces of gorgeous, vegetable tanned leather and a small amount of hardware we will make a stunning, perfectly sized everyday handbag.
Using leather dyes and hand tools and working from a basic template, there is scope to keep it simple or add your own artistic twist to your creation. This course is suitable for crafting beginners but is fairly physical, using hammers, leather punches, a Stanley knife and a small amount of glue. The dye we will be using is a vibrant, water based, mixable leather stain that comes in a rainbow of colours. Beginning with a herb walk, we will learn how to identify the medicinal plants all around us, herbal tea tastings and making your own seasonal herbal remedies. We will be exploring the seasonal medicinal plants that can support our health at this time and making our very own spring tonics and teas.

Literature of Strata Florida with Dafydd Johnston We will be discussing some of the literature and poetry connected to Strata Florida Abbey, starting in the Middle Ages. There will be an opportunity to visit the site and see the ruins of the abbey, the yew and the cemetery and some of the englyns on the gravestones.

10am-4pm The Cistercian Abbey of Strata Florida with David Austin Historical and archaeological research work over the last 27 years has revealed a much more complex and richer narrative for the origins, development and post-Dissolution story of this very important site in Welsh culture. The day will be split into four parts: 1. Origins and the contexts for creation; 2. the growth and decline of the abbey; 3. the Stedman occupation of the site up to the building of their house in 1670; and 4. a guided tour of the site and its main features.

Botanical Wool Dyeing Workshop with Sian Lester Join Welsh textile artist Siân Lester for a hands-on one-day introductory botanical dyeing experience, capturing the hidden hues gathered from the plant landscape around Strata Florida. Siân will guide you in
identifying and consciously foraging for local seasonal plants and lichen to dye locally sourced wool, echoing the plant life and deep woollen history of the monastery. There will be an opportunity to try out Japanese shibori techniques to make patterns on cloth and Siân will assist you with making a record of all the colours for your future reference and making. Suitable for beginners and advanced. All materials and recipes will be supplied. Wear some old clothes, bring an apron, notebook, some secateurs, and gardening gloves. You will learn all about this traditional craft and alchemy - gathering seasonal medicinal plants to turn into a healing floral water.

10am-4.30pm Spoon Carving with David Hunter This full day course allows you to take a log and turn it into a spoon you’ll be able to use in the kitchen forever. We teach you how to safely and effectively use axes and different knives to shape your spoon, giving you the perfect introduction into making spoons for yourself at home.
Skills you will learn: Safe and effective use of a carving axe; carving knife and hook knife; an understanding of what green wood work is and why we make spoons from fresh wood; an understanding of the properties of wood and how they effect your spoon carving. David Hunter is a full time coppice and green woodworker who had been carving spoons for over 10 years. Tea and Coffee will be provided but please bring your own lunch. 10am-4pm The Farming Landscape of Strata Florida: from kin to family farms. With David Austin Close examination of estate maps and other evidence by the Strata Florida Research Project has revealed a fascinating and surprising chronology for how the landscape has been created over the last thousand years to become what it is today.
The day will be in three parts: 1. the estate maps of the later eighteenth century and what they actually show; 2. taking the eighteenth-century picture forward into the present; 3. going back in time to the landscape and the farming community as they existed just before the abbey was created and how much they retained of that older world.
