Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August, 11am-3pm Ceredigion Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild The Strata Florida Trust are excited to welcome the Ceredigion Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers to our site for a special weekend of demonstrations. The event is free to attend at any time between the hours stated above, with donations to the Strata Trust being welcomed. Light refreshments will also be provided. The Guild have created a custom piece of beautiful art of the Abbey Arch which will be proudly displayed for the first time for all to see that weekend and will become a permanent piece in our Exhibition. It is on the Cambrian Mountains Astro Trail and is less than a mile from a Dark Skies Discovery Site. Join us over two evenings in September with instruction by Dafydd Wyn Morgan, and the opportunity to take your own photos of the night sky against the iconic landscape of Strata Florida.. Wednesday 18th September
10am-4pm Mining in Ceredigion *NOW FULLY BOOKED* Join us for a day of talks and walks and learn more about the history, impact and environmental legacy of metal mining in Ceredigion from the middle ages to the modern day. The day will start with a talks on the Metal Mines Programme in Ceredigion and the history of the Abbey Consols mine, followed by a guided walk up to the mine after lunch. In the afternoon, there will be a talk on the economic and social impacts of lead mining in Ceredigion. Teas, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day and feel free to bring a packed lunch. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear if you plan on walking with us up to the mine. Saturday 26th October
10am-4pm Barddoniaeth Ystrad Fflur, with Professor Dafydd Johnston This course will be delivered in Welsh. We will be discussing some of the famous poetry connected to Strata Florida Abbey, starting in the Middle Ages with Gruffudd Gryg’s cywydd to the yew above the grave of Dafydd ap Gwilym, Guto Glyn’s praise poem to Abbot Rhys and Dafydd Nanmor’s description of the abbey church. Among the modern poems we’ll be looking at will be an odel by Hedd Wynn, a lyric by T. Gwynn Jones and some of the works of the Ffair Rhos poets. There will be an opportunity to visit the site and see the ruins of the abbey, the yew and the cemetery and some of the englynion on the gravestones. The day will be suitable for Welsh speakers and for higher level learners. Refreshments provided throughout the day but please bring your own lunch. Cost: £50

Writing the Dark: darkness as inspiration for creative writing, with Jacqueline Yallop With the concept of literal darkness becoming rarer on a planet dominated by illumination, Jacqueline Yallop creates a world of exploration and the pulling of creativity out of the darkness. Strata Florida is renowned for its low light pollution and is less than a mile from a Dark Skies Discovery Site, so is the ideal location to find inspiration. Darkness evokes so much within us; fear, mystery, curiosity, danger and safety - all of which will be harnessed into emotive writing during this course, under Jacqueline's very capable guidance.
